This exercise is designed to simulate a real-world cyber incident and allow the participants to work through the experience using either their playbook, runbook, or incident response (IR) strategy. Once the exercise is complete, the participant will have a better understanding of their company’s incident response plans and how those plans would stand up against a real-life incident.
This incident response experience is a real-world exercise modeled on events of the past or an anticipated outcome for the future. The best way to approach this exercise is to assign participants to the roles they currently play within their company and to treat the exercise as a real incident. This activity is designed to illustrate how a given team would perform in the likely event of a cyber incident. In addition, field guides will be provided to assist with navigating the user through the experience.
Participants are divided into teams and must work together to identify the real threat to provide a proper and thorough response. The exercise is not a competition, it is a mission to work as a team to combat sophisticated attacks. As the exercise progresses, there will be scheduled breaks so that participants can debrief on the results of each module. Participants can then consider the decisions they made and determine the impact in a more effective way. Regular debriefings also allow for additional instruction and tips for the next module.
